The Leung Lab

A Week of Awards and Impact at ASTMH 2025

Last week, several members of our lab and collaborators traveled to Toronto, Ontario to attend the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) 2025 Annual Meeting. It was an energizing week filled with scientific presentations, inspiring talks, and well-deserved recognition for our team’s hard work.

Our PI, Dr. Daniel Leung, was honored as a Bailey K. Ashford Medalist, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of tropical medicine.

Lena Mazza (Postdoctoral Fellow) and Paola Fonseca-Romero (PhD Student) competed in the Young Investigator Award Competition, with Lena earning first place in her session. Sarah Dallas (Undergraduate Research Assistant) placed second in the Clinical Investigator Award Competition.

In addition to these achievements, our team delivered a strong slate of scientific presentations: oral presentations by Lena and Paola, and posters by Sarah, Aparna Mangadu (Research Analyst), Adama Mamby Keita (Collaborator | CVD Mali), and Debashish Biswas (Collaborator | icddr,b and PhD Student, University of Western Australia).

Our group enjoyed reconnecting with national and international collaborators, attending a variety of well-organized sessions, and gathering for dinner each evening. We’re already looking forward to ASTMH 2026 and are excited to see our team’s work continue to grow and make an impact.
